Research shows that seventy-five (75) percent of juvenile delinquents suffer from vision disorders. Such disorders are not related to acuity (20/20 vision) and are often referred to as “The Hidden Disability”. Awareness of the relationship between vision disorders and learning is just becoming recognized in the academic community and is not widely known or understood. It is important for educators in particular and the public in general, to be aware of and alert to the multiple vague symptoms that together indicate a struggling student or athlete may have a vision/visual processing disorder.
The U.S. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), however, says learning disabilities do NOT include learning problems that are primarily due to visual, hearing or motor disabilities. That is because these disorders are treatable when discovered, and in most cases, correctable. Attendees at this conference will learn the relationship of vision and visual processing disorders to the learning process. They will also learn about how acoustics in the classroom affect hearing and how that relates to the learning process.
